Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus

This one took a while – I thought Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus was smaller, for some reason. This is a big chunky moss, furry, standing well above the ground. I found it growing in large patches on the dunes at Tentsmuir, and covering huge swathes of the forest floor among the trees.

The stems are red. The leaves have a double-nerve which doesn’t reach the tip, and are tightly curved at the bottom. The leaves are very pale, and slightly toothed at the tip. Some of the stems had multiple branches, but not all.

I found that the plants growing in the forest were bushier and greener than the smaller, more golden plants on the sand dunes.
