Cryphaea heteromalla

Lateral Cryphaea

Cryphaea heteromalla 1

On the recent moss outing I was reminded that we’d found this moss on an earlier expedition, to Abernethy, where it’s on the edge of its range.  (We were told that its range is expanding again, because of reductions in atmospheric SO2.)

I went back today (April 2018) and found it still there, on the same elder tree.  (Previously, also learnt that elder bark has a neutral pH, making it a suitable host for several species.) It’s quite distinctive, a stiff moss with the main shoot held close to the branch, and sub-shoots coming off at right angles, pointing downwards.

There are sessile capsules sitting on one side of the sub-shoot without any obvious seta.

The next challenge is to find it again, in a different location.
